Turning every coffee into stars and every star into loyalty

Starbucks Türkiye’s stars, campaigns, prepaid card, QR payment and customer service processes come together in one experience on Microsoft Dynamics 365 and 1page-Loyalty&Campaign.

About Starbucks

The Starbucks story began in 1971 with a single store at Pike Place Market in Seattle. Inspired by Italian coffee culture, Howard Schultz’s vision of a “third place after home and work” turned Starbucks into an experience brand far beyond coffee. Today, operating more than 40,000 stores in 89 markets, Starbucks continues to offer quality, human connection and the distinctive Starbucks Experience in every cup.

Starbucks
The Starbucks Türkiye app is not merely a mobile app that makes paying for coffee easier; it is a powerful loyalty and payment platform that brings the customer’s money, stars, preferences and brand relationship together in one digital experience. Every coffee turns into stars, every star into another visit, every visit into a stronger customer relationship.

Turning every coffee into stars and every star into loyalty

Challenge

For the loyalty programme to deliver real value, every eligible in-store purchase had to be matched to the right customer and star earning calculated instantly. Managing different movements — earning, redemption, cancellation, returns, campaign stars, membership tiers and free-drink entitlements — consistently across millions of transactions was critical. Offering the same experience to customers at different loyalty levels did not reward regular customers enough for the relationship they had built. Membership tiers had to be calculated from past purchases, tier transitions had to happen automatically, and each tier needed its own benefits. As well as a fast mobile payment experience, balances, cards, top-ups, spending and loyalty movements had to be managed securely and consistently. Physical Starbucks Cards, mobile cards, e-gift cards and different top-up channels working within the same account created a complex financial movement structure. Offering every customer the same campaign did not fit the personal nature of the Starbucks experience. Customers differ in preferred products, visit frequency, membership tier, balance usage and how they respond to campaigns. Limiting the loyalty programme to stars earned in Starbucks stores prevented connections with the other value programmes in a customer’s daily life. Integrations with payment institutions, digital wallets, travel programmes and wearable devices had to work securely with membership, balance and star systems. Topics such as balance top-ups, missing stars, card registration, campaign participation, free-drink redemption or mobile payment each required examining different transaction histories. To reach the right resolution, the customer service agent needed to see the customer’s card, balance, loyalty, campaign and communication history together. Handing out stars or publishing campaigns did not on its own show success. It had to be measured which campaign created participation, which benefit was used and which customer moved from Green to Gold.

Solution

We designed the star earning and redemption infrastructure on 1page-Loyalty&Campaign. Eligible in-store purchases are matched to the loyalty account and stars are credited. Every 15 stars collected becomes a free drink; stars earned and used can be followed in the customer account. Returns, cancellations, campaign earnings, free-drink redemptions and star validity rules are all managed by the same loyalty engine. We built a loyalty structure that calculates the Green and Gold membership tiers dynamically from the stars earned on the customer’s beverage purchases over the last 365 days. New customers start at Green; those meeting the defined conditions move automatically to Gold. Free-drink size, complimentary customisations, birthday privileges and tier-specific campaigns are defined centrally. We integrated the Starbucks Card prepaid balance structure with the mobile app and the loyalty account. Customers can create a Starbucks Card in the app, top up their balance, move an existing physical card together with its balance and stars into their mobile account, and view past transactions. In store they identify themselves by scanning the QR code in the app, earn stars and pay quickly with the balance they loaded in advance. The same QR code combines identity, payment and loyalty in a single store interaction. On Microsoft Dynamics 365 and 1page-Loyalty&Campaign we built dynamic segmentation and campaign management. Customers can be segmented by Green or Gold tier, purchase frequency, product preferences, store behaviour, star movements, balance top-ups and campaign engagement. Campaigns can be defined with conditions such as product, store, date, time, customer segment, payment method and transaction count. Through the “Join the campaign” option, customers can earn stars, free drinks or special benefits in the campaigns they opt into. We opened the Starbucks Türkiye app to third-party payment and loyalty ecosystems. Masterpass integration enabled topping up the Starbucks Card from bank cards. Digital wallets such as Juzdan and Paycell were brought into the mobile experience. Miles&Smiles accounts were matched with Starbucks Rewards accounts so that miles can be converted into Starbucks stars. With the Garmin integration, customers can pay in store using the QR code on their smartwatch. We centralised customer service and CRM processes on Microsoft Dynamics 365. Agents can review the customer profile, Starbucks Cards, balance and star movements, membership tier, campaign participation, free-drink entitlements and past requests in the same customer view. Requests are recorded by subject and priority, routed to the relevant teams and followed end to end. Starbucks Türkiye does not merely run its loyalty programme operationally; it improves it by learning from every customer response. The outcome of one campaign becomes organisational insight that feeds the next segment, offer design and experience decision.

Result

Every purchase became a new step that adds value to the customer’s relationship with Starbucks. While customers follow their stars and free-drink entitlements in the mobile app, Starbucks Türkiye can manage all loyalty movements through a central, traceable structure. Starbucks Rewards turned from a points programme rewarding each transaction into a membership experience that develops with the customer’s relationship to the brand. The more customers engage, the more value they gain; loyalty is backed by concrete, visible benefits. The Starbucks Türkiye app moved beyond a digital loyalty card into a closed-loop payment and stored-value ecosystem. Customers get a faster, more advantageous payment experience, while pre-loaded balance forms a strong link to the next visit. Starbucks Türkiye moved from general campaigns to personalised offers shaped by customer behaviour and loyalty tier. Every campaign becomes measurable customer behaviour, and the results feed the audience and design of the next one. Starbucks Rewards stopped being a closed points programme and became an extensible loyalty ecosystem that exchanges value with payment, travel and digital life platforms. Customers can join the Starbucks experience through different channels while all earning and redemption movements merge in the same loyalty account. Customers get a more complete support experience without getting lost between teams. Customer service works not merely as a channel that solves problems but as the CRM hub that sustains the continuity of the Starbucks experience. Starbucks Türkiye does not merely run its loyalty programme operationally; it improves it by learning from every customer response. The outcome of one campaign becomes organisational insight that feeds the next segment, offer design and experience decision.
